| Problem description: | Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) adoption in Norway has historically been very low compared to its neighbours in Sweden, Denmark, the UK, and Germany. The reason for this has been an abundance of energy generation and associated low prices due to large reserves of hydroelectric power. However, the increase in electric vehicle (EV) purchases and sudden increase in fast-charging installations, as well as the North Sea Link has put pressure on an ageing power network and caused price instabilities far outside historical norms.
Behind-the-meter (BTM) BESS is a BESS connected to a power generator or power consumer, without direct connection to the energy grid. The potential of such BESS for energy shifting, trading (NODES, Nord Pool) and peak shaving make it attractive for generating revenue, reducing costs, and reducing stress on the Norwegian grid. However, determining the optimal factors necessary for BESS to be profitable is not trivial. Energy tariffs, grid connection fees, BESS lifetime and power capabilities vs cost are just some of the aspects that can cause a BESS business case to fail. The current project proposes to explore the revenue generation potential of a BTM BESS installation and determine the main (monetary) risk factors associated with such an installation. |

Red line
Your thesis should have a "red line", which is visible throughout the whole thesis. This means you should mention in the beginning of each chapter how the chapter contributes to the "goals of the thesis".
Use of scientific methods
A thesis follows a standard method:
- describe the problem (problemstilling)
- extract the challenges. These challenges should be measurable, e.g. method is too slow to be useful to voice handover.
- Analyse technology with respect to challenges. Don't write & repeat "everything" from a certain technology, concentrate on those parts (e.g. protocols) which are of importance for your problem

- Wikipedia is good to use to get an overview on what is happening. But there is not scientific verification of Wikipedia, thus you should use wikipedia only in the introduction of a chapter (if you use text from wikipedia). Use scientific literature for your thesis.

Perform an evaluation of your own work. Revisit the challenges and discuss in how you fulfilled them. Provide alternative solution and discuss what should be done (or what could have been done).
