Property:Synonym

This is a property of type Text.

It records an alternative label for the same concept, in the sense of skos:altLabel — spelling variants, plurals, acronyms and expansions.

On Smart Home: Synonym = Smart home

On Wireless Sensor Networks: Synonym = Wireless sensor networks, WSN

The convention on this wiki is that one spelling is the preferred term and carries the content; the variants become redirects to it and are recorded here so the merge stays visible and searchable. Recording a synonym is what makes a merge reversible: the redirect alone loses the information that the two names were ever distinct.

Why Text and not Page

This property is deliberately Text, not Page. This wiki runs SMW with the default $smwgQEqualitySupport = SMW_EQ_FULL, so a Page value that happens to be a redirect is silently resolved to its target. A Page-typed synonym would therefore collapse to the very term it is a synonym of — Smart Home → Smart Home — and record nothing at all. As Text the variant spelling survives verbatim, which is the whole point.
