Property:Broader

From Basic Internet Foundation Wiki

This is a property of type Page.

It records the parent (broader) term of a keyword, in the sense of skos:broader.

How to use it

Store the relation on the child page only. The parent's list of narrower terms is derived by querying [[Broader::Name of the parent]], so nobody has to maintain the reverse direction and the two can never drift apart.

On IoT Security set Broader = Societal Security.
Do not also add IoT Security to a list on Societal Security.

Keep it to one broader term per keyword, two at the very most. A term with many parents is usually a sign that it should be split, or that it is really a Related association rather than a hierarchy.

The roots of the tree are the pages in Category:Research Domain; they have no broader term of their own.

Not to be confused with

  • Property:Keywords — tags a content page (presentation, thesis, course) with a topic. That is subject indexing, not hierarchy.
  • Property:Related — association between two terms with no parent/child direction.
